How to eat a lemon (and why!)

July 20, 2014Greetings!

How are you?  How is your summer going?  I just tried the most wonderful new thing the other day:  an aprium.  Have you heard of these?  It’s a fruit – a cross between an apricot and a plum, heavy on the apricot – so good! What will they think of next?  Summer fruit is the best 🙂

Speaking of fruit, have you ever eaten a whole lemon?!  I wanted to share a great medicinal tool using lemons.  Check out the article below, along with a recent success story.

Happy summer,

Colleen

Success Story

I wanted to share the results of a recent in-person session I had:  “Lisa” came in complaining of a worsening of her asthma symptoms.  Her usual medications were not working and she was concerned.

I treated her with acupuncture and essential oils to open her airways and decrease inflammation in the lungs.   As she was resting on the table, she began to cry.  She was surprised to be crying and suddenly realized it was the anniversary of a difficult romantic breakup she had experienced 2 years earlier.  “I can’t believe this is still bothering me!”, she said.

At the end of the treatment she got up and her asthma symptoms had markedly decreased and she felt much better.  She texted me later that day to tell me how “incredible” she felt, like “a new woman”.

In Chinese Medicine we know that grief is held in the lungs.  If emotions are not fully resolved they can certainly cause physical issues.   I continue to be amazed at how the body recognizes anniversaries of traumatic events, and I’m honored to be able to help people process them out.

For Lisa, this grief was still hanging around because of the way her relationship ended.  It was quite a shock for her and really “heart-breaking”.  It was a deeply satisfying relationship for her and she has never had another conversation with this man.  This lack of closure and understanding was impacting her – she couldn’t let him go and was still grieving.  She was also confused and felt betrayed.  I encouraged her to write down her feelings and have a “conversation” with him (without him needing to actually be there) about it all, because it was impacting her health and her current relationships.

Giving a voice to old feelings that have not fully been expressed is really empowering and healing.  Lisa continues to process her feelings and continues to feel better and better.

How to eat a whole lemon (and why!)

You eat it as a tasty, healing remedy called The Whole Lemon Drink.

Why?  I recommend the Whole Lemon Drink for these conditions:

  • lymphatic congestion
  • after an illness, especially an intestinal one
  • toxic emotional residue
  • after taking antibiotics
  • to enhance the immune system

What it does:

  • stimulates the lymphatic system to clear out cellular waste
  • clear out old emotions stuck in the lymph or the intestines
  • cleans intestinal residue
  • strengthens cell walls
  • stimulates the liver and gallbladder
  • gently detoxifies

How to make the Whole Lemon Drink:

  • get out your blender
  • toss in one whole organic lemon – the whole lemon, peel and all, cut into quarters
  • add 1 1/2 cups of any organic juice (citrus is good).  You can use less juice and more water if desired.
  • add 1 Tbsp organic olive oil
  • blend on high for a minute or so, until it’s all blended/emulsified
  • strain pulp out through a fine mesh strainer into a glass
  • drink it up – yum!  (you can split up the drink into 2 doses if desired)

Most find this drink to be really tasty.  It does take a few minutes to make, but the benefits are worth it.  I usually prescribe 1-2 drinks, depending on the patient’s needs.
