Saltwater Pools & Thyroid Health

I just got home from a trip to Palm Springs with my mom to hang out by the pool with a good book. Yes it was really hot but it was also really fun. The best part? Our hotel’s pool was salt water! I was thrilled to discover this and it was one of the main reasons I booked us there.

I grew up in pools and they are totally my happy place – except for all the chlorine. Ugh. Not only is it smelly but it’s harmful in high amounts.

How so? Chlorine is what’s called a halogen (fluoride is also one). Halogens basically push iodine away from your thyroid which really needs it.

Without it the thyroid can’t function well at all, leading to symptoms like fatigue, weight gain, hair loss, feeling cold, brain fog, difficulty concentrating, and sleep/digestive/hormone problems.
Reducing your toxic load in general is crucial if you have chronic or autoimmune conditions, and this is an easy one to tackle if you’re struggling with any of the above symptoms.

One source of both chlorine and fluoride is often from city tap water, so start filtering your water if you haven’t yet.

Switch to fluoride-free toothpaste.

Watch your chlorine exposure if you’re a big swimmer. If you aren’t able to do this, consider epsom salt baths or vitamin C (as a topical spray) to help speed up the body’s elimination of the chlorine.

If you know you have a thyroid or other hormone condition, especially Hashimoto’s autoimmune thyroid, definitely do your best to limit your exposure to chlorine and fluoride.

If you’re not sure if you have a thyroid issue, we can run lab tests to see.

Small steps count. You can do it.
