7 Tips for a Healthier Thanksgiving

November 25, 2014

The holiday season is here already!  How did that happen?!  In the states we celebrate our Thanksgiving holiday this week.  It can be a day of over-indulgence so I thought I’d provide some tips to keep it healthy.  Check out the short article below.

Also, as a follow-up to my last newsletter about my successful approach to addressing auto-immune disorders, I’m sharing a link from one of my favorite sources for auto-immune paleo recipes.  Mickey Trescott has compiled a list of holiday recipes that make great substitutions for traditional foods full of sugar, dairy, gluten and grain.  Click here (it’s free):  http://autoimmune-paleo.com/introducing-holidays-on-the-autoimmune-protocol/

They’re ideal for anyone looking to improve their health, not just those with specific concerns.

Blessings for a peaceful and healthy week,

Colleen

7 Tips for a Healthier Thanksgiving

1.  Eat organic as much as possible – reduce your exposure to more pesticides.

2.  Support local butchers (and farmers) – they are less likely to use hormones and antibiotics.

3.  Make super-nutritious homemade bone broth from the leftover bones – here’s the recipe I use  http://nomnompaleo.com/post/3615609338/slow-cooker-beef-bone-broth  (just substitute your turkey bones).

4.  Substitute honey or maple syrup for white sugar – not because they are necessarily much more nutritious than sugar, but because they are real, unprocessed foods, which are always the better choice.  And of course, take it easy on the sugary stuff anyway, right?

5.  Eat the vegetables on your plate first.  Then eat the protein, then the starch, and then the dessert.

6.  Move your body after you eat.  Go for a walk with the people you might not spend enough time with.  It’s good for your soul and for your digestion.

7.  And lastly, remember to be thankful.  Even if you’re having a hard time, be thankful for every little thing.  Even if you’re stuck in traffic, be thankful that you have a car.  Don’t like what’s being served?  Be thankful you have food on the table in front of you.  Don’t like who you’re spending the day with?  Be thankful you have people to spend the day with.  Don’t like the weather?  Be thankful you have a roof over your head.  Yes?

Enjoy the day.  I’m thankful you’re in my life.
